In Chinese tradition, bridge and yard are very important to intellectual’s life. They reflect the human experience of time in landscape and nature. As modern architecture’s visibility is becoming more and more serious, we should find a way to rebuild the spiritual world that bridge and yard bring us. To us, it’s the “broken bridge and vertical yard”.

“Broken bridge”: we reverse the form of bridge, and build a “broken bridge” which is submerged in the canal. It will offer people such an opportunity to be as close as they can to the canal. The bridge is not only a traffic system, but also a complex which contains both commercial and exhibition part. As it take full advantage of the space under the water, it disappears on the water.

“Vertical yard”: We draw the context of the xiaohe street nearby, and form network of the building. 9 meters is prepared for the buildings and 3 meters for the road. The buildings are pure cubes, which use the 1.5meters thick wall to surround themselves. The wall contain the steps inside. Them will lead the visitors to walk upstairs and see the yards at different levels inside, or see the beauty of the canals. Differ from the tradition way of visiting a yard in two dimension, we change the way to three dimension and deliver the space on the ground. We also use thin grilles as surface, which enables people to see through the walls and get more freedom when they walk in or between the buildings.
