In the afternoon of 16th (Sunday) March, 2014, the Award Ceremony of UIA-HYP Cup 2013 International Student Competition in Architectural Design & "Learning Design with Famous Architect" Selection Contest was held successfully at CBC (China Building Center). More than 30 architects, presidents from architectural schools and colleges as well as over 70 award-winning students including 5 international students from Uruguay and Mexico attended the ceremony.

 

UIA-HYP Cup International Competition in Architectural Design is held with UIA (Union International des Architectes) being the international supporter, School of Architecture, Tianjin University and Urban Environment Design Magazine Press (UED) being the organizer, Chinese National Supervision Committee of Higher Architecture Education, Chinese National Evaluation Committee of Higher Architecture Education and Architectural Art Committee of China Artists Association being the guiding institutions and Shanghai Hyp-arch Architectural Design Consultant Inc. being the exclusive title-sponsor. Each year the competition will be held in collaboration with a national university and for the competition of 2013, the co-organizer was Fauculty of Architecture and Urban Planning, Chongqing University (CQU). The competition attracted more than 2 000 groups of students to apply and over 900 submissions were received from which 1 first prize winner, 3 second prize winners, 10 third prize winners, 23 honorable mention winners and 40 finalist award winners were selected.

The award ceremony was host by Liu Qing, executive editor in chief of Urban Environment Design Magazine Press (UED). Firstly, Cui Kai, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, vice president and chief architect of China Architecture Design and Research Group (CAG) gave a speech. Mr. Cui Kai, as representative of UIA, has been serving as the executive chairman of the competition for two years in succession, which is a great help for the competition to be more international. He commented that the competition developed the students' ability to conduct reverse thinking about architecture positively and drew the designers’ attention towards environment, thus understanding the environment better. In the end, he wished the competition 2014 a more international and influential one, discovering and raising more and more architectural talents for the Chinese architectural practice.

After showing a video to review the competition of 2013, the award ceremony began officially. The guests on spot presented the awards for representatives of first, second, third prize as well as honorable mention and finalist award winners.

The success of the competition is inseparable from the universities' support and help and the students' design of excellence is inseparable from the supervisors' guidance. Therefore, the organizer of the competition presented "Excellent Organizing Award" and "Excellent Supervisor Award" for those extraordinary universities and representative supervisors who had done a great job in the competition.

UIA-HYP CUP "LEARNING DESIGN WITH FAMOUS ARCHITECT" SELECTION CONTEST

 

"Learning Design with Famous Architect" Selection Contest is a bridge for architectural majors and architectural masters to communicate, enabling them to have a profound apprehension of the masters' influence through their speeches and behaviors. This year is the second time that the contest has been held successfully with a strong and powerful mentor team including Dominique Perrault (France), renowned French architect and winner of Mies van der Rohe Award; Cui Kai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, vice president and chief architect of China Architecture Design and Research Group (CAG); Zhuang Weimin, national architectural master and president of School of Architecture, Tsinghua University; Liu Kecheng, president of College of Architecture, Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology; Qi Xin, director and chief architect of QiXin Architects and Engineers; Li Xinggang, associate architect of China Architecture Design and Research Group (CAG) and host of Li Xinggang Architecture Studio; Wang Hui, founding partner and principal architect of URBANUS Architecture & Design and Gong Jun, executive director, general manager and design director of Shanghai Hyp-arch Architectural Design Consultant Inc. Representatives of each award-winning student group gave a wonderful presentation of three minute long to the influential mentor team, after which the supervisors and the winners had a colorful and dynamic interaction.

 

After a heated discussion, the supervisors and students made their choice through a mutual election, the result of which was announced by the staff and the offers were delivered.

 

The New Book of UIA 2012/2013 HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design Released

 

Up to now, the competition has been held twice with an overwhelming influence in both national and international architectural field. Therefore, Urban Environment Design Magazine Press (UED) collected the excellent award-winning works in the 2012/2013 competition into a book which is officially released at the very day of the activity, hoping that it will be an inspiration for the architectural major students and inject fresh blood into the architectural industry as well as related practices.

 

The closing of the release ceremony of the new book marked a temporary end of the 2013 UIA-HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design, following which is the beginning of the 2014 UIA-HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design to be co-organized by School of Architecture, Tsinghua University and World Architecture Magazine Press.

 

President Zhuang Weimin commented on the competition saying that "The competition of 2014 will carry forward the earlier achievements while promoting its international influence, attracting more and more international judges and students to join."

 

So far the Award Ceremony of UIA-HYP Cup 2013 International Student Competition in Architectural Design & "Learning Design with Famous Architect" Selection Contest came to a full end. Let's expect a more wonderful and surprising HYP Cup 2014.
