The Museum of Memory: Embodied Place of Relationship between Rethinking and Forgetting

The project attempt to establish a proposal for the New Museum of Memory in Seoul, and this proposal will endeavour to shape a non-linear gallery of history from the 15th century to the present, considering how a multiplicity of places and identities can articulate and create the place of memory within the context of the historic and contemporary city of Seoul. In addition, the final proposition seeks to create proposed places of memory based on a theorised and interdisciplinary methodology presented in this project. In particular, the reconstructed historical landscape enclosing the museum will be a place of restoration by considering historical images and an argument from contemporary reality, and the spatial arrangement of the museum will concentrate on the subject of artefacts based on Seoul’s royal heritage from the 15th century to the present by shaping non-linear galleries. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to stablish embodied places of the relationship between rethinking and forgetting within the context of a museum in the contemporary city of Seoul. Hence, The spatial arrangement of the gallery space in the museum is considered as a type of archipelago, which is similar to an island floating in the sea. The notions of shape and the circulation of the buildings are derived from superimposition of the layers of memory in this site, and the fragment of individual and social memory constructs an interpretational relationship by positioning the gallery presenting the historic royal heritage in the 15th century of the Joseon dynasty as Yates mentioned ‘the art of memory in mnemotechnics.
