Architecture Education In a Village

The village located in the south of China has reserved the memory of the lives of the past; is accepting the impact of the modern industrial science and technology civilization, and waiting for the coming of the future with new possibilities. We choose Bishan Village, Yi County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, which is more familiar to us, as the start of our train of thought. Surrounded by the distinctive Hui style architectures, Bishan Village has not been developed too far by the commercial activities, retaining the unsophisticated folk custom, the strong flavour of rural life and the abundant cultural atmosphere passed on by their ancestors. After two-years learning of architecture, we are looking forward to building a college of architecture, open and free, turly integrated into the rural surroundings. Moreover, it could bring the education of architecture back to a extensive state in which everyone has the chance to participate in the process of building a house. Our design is aimed at building a platform on which villagers and students could conduct a two-way communication. After logically organized the building, we spread the necessary function all over the Bishan Village, avoiding the destroy of the texture of village, and provide more possibilities to them. Hui-style Architecture is a product of people who adapt to the local climate for a long time.

Summer here has high temperature and rainfall, while winter is cold and moist. We consult the traditional buildings’ react to the environment and combine them with modern technology in this design. Can we build a college in village? In Bishan, we develop a wonderful imagination.

Here, every one can be a teacher, a student, and also a heir of the village life. The traditional master-apprentice mode has been kept in the form of ten studio workshops. The sink-style courtyard connects students’ learning areas with villagers’ living quarters, which makes both of them linked in vertical direction without being in terrupted. At the end of the village, the library scatters in both sides of the river in the type of six book houses and are joint together with trestles.
