The Winners of the 2012 HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design Have been Announced!
HYP Cup 2012 International Student Competition in Architectural Design kicked off at the stadium in Tianjin University (TJU) On Oct. 26th, 2012. The competition was co-hosted by UIA, TJU and UED Magazine Press with HYP Architecture Design Consultants.INC in Shanghai as the sole title sponsor. The starting ceremony was hosted by Kong Yuhang, Associate Dean of School of Architecture, Tianjin University. Zhang Qi, Dean/professor and PhD Supervisor of School of Architecture, Tianjin University and Gong Jun, Executive Director/General Manager/Design Director of HYP Architecture Design Consultants.INC gave a speech respectively.

Winner of Order Of The British Empire, United Kingdom Royal Academician, Ex-president of Architectural Association(AA), founer of Hopkins Architects—Sri Michael Hopkins served as the president of the Jury with Cui Kai, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Vice President and Chief Architect of China Architecture Design and Research Group (CAG) being the executive president.

After four rounds of assessment and examination, the jury picked out 33 pieces of works from 321 entries worldwide with one first prize winner, three second prize winners and eight third prize winners. After a serious, intense and professional selection and discussion,'Patching The City Wall'of Meng Jie and Zhang Zhizhe from School of Architecture, Tianjin University stood out and won the first prize.
Judges of this competition also included Zhong Dekun,professor and PhD supervisor of School of Architecture, Southeast University and director of National Supervision Board of Architectural Education (China); Alan Penn, dean/professor of the Bartlett of UCL Bartlett School of Architecture and director of the VR Centre for the Built Environment; Zhu Wenyi, dean/professor of School of architecture, Tsinghua University; Tim Heath, Chairman of Architecture & Urban Design at the University of Nottingham and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Engineering; Hu Yue, Architect in Chief of Beijing Institute of Architectural Design; Zhang Qi, President/professor and doctoral supervisor of School of architecture, Tianjin University; Huang Yiru, Associated Dean of College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University; Bogdan Reichenberg, founder of Studio Reichenberg Arhitektura in Slovenia; Peng Lixiao, Editor in Chief of UED Magazine Press, Specially appointed Professor of School of Architecture,Tianjin University and Gong Jun, Executive Director/General Manager/Design Director of HYP Architects in Shanghai.

The competition stuck to the principles of justice, equity and objectivity and the judging process was carried out under challenge system and confidentiality rules and regulations. The competition aimed at: (1) searching and constructing a human space with a sense of place in increasingly-fragmented cities or unordered villages; (2) exploring environment-friendly and sustainable ideas in the information age; (3) integrating creative design concepts with solid basic skills effectively in architectural education. The main requirements include: (1) making detailed examinations and reflections on architectural history; (2) exploring complicated requirements to architecture and environment of current users; (3) paying attention to events in specific sites; (4) configuring viable urban and architectural spaces.
The three second prizes and eight third prizes go to School of Architecture, Tianjin University; College of Architecture in Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology; School of Architecture, South China University of Technology; University of Hong Kong and College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Zhejing University respectively.
Native and international judges considered the HYP Cup 2012 International Student Competition in Architectural Design had reached an international standard. Part of the students'works showed unique creativity. The starting point of the students'design concepts were diversified as there were no special limits or restraints in the assignment. The jury reached an agreement on that the winning works shared clear and outstanding design concepts and that the drawings were vivid and very logical. However, at the same time, the jury expected more from the architectural students and noted that much attention should be paid to the basic architectural design skills in the learning process.
